Nursing education needed to improve ADR monitoring
Educational programs are to enhance nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward adverse drug reaction monitoring, a study found. Published in the May issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, the study also highlighted the importance of strategies to support nursing units and decrease workload intensity to ensure safe medication administration. The cross-sectional descriptive study included 165 RNs from four tertiary hospitals, with data collected using self-report questionnaires from Aug. 5 to Sept. 16, 2022. During the past year, 61.2% of nurses said they had observed ADRs, and 31.5% had received ADR education. Only 51.5% reported all ADR cases. The nurses cited time constraints and lack of clinical confidence as major barriers to reporting ADRs.
