Nursing leaders reduce costly use of pharmaceutical practice
Swedish Health Services’ nursing leaders with pharmacy and medicine teams to reduce the overuse of intravenous acetaminophen, reducing costs without sacrificing patient safety. Published in the Journal of Nursing Administration July/August issue, the article details how the greater Seattle area-based health system sought to better control pharmacy costs by limiting the overuse of the intravenous acetaminophen in patients who could be treated with less expensive oral medications. Clinical nurses participated in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee discussions to ensure Swedish continued to use the intravenous acetaminophen to manage pain when appropriate. From 2015 to 2020, the health system reduced the intravenous acetaminophen by 97%, saving the hospital $8.5 million.
