Study: ED boarding negatively affects clinicians’ satisfaction

Clinicians raised about patient safety and quality of care delivered to boarding patients in emergency departments and said boarding negatively affected their satisfaction, according to a . Published in the July 2023 issue of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, the study found clinicians reported high rates of perceived verbal and/or physical abuse from boarding patients (86.8% of nurses and 41.1% of providers). The clinicians suggested standardizing care, proactive planning and cultural change to improve care. Researchers sent a cross-sectional survey to ED attending physicians, resident physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses at a single hospital; 94 responded for a 34.1% response rate.
