Team therapist reduces critical care nurse burnout
Hiring a team therapist to critical care nurses can reduce burnout and improve resiliency, a study found. The researchers, who presented their findings at the American Thoracic Society 2025 International Conference in San Francisco, found adding a team therapist at Sharp Chula Vista (Calif.) Medical Center, was more effective in supporting nurses’ well-being than encouraging them to seek outside help. Turnover, which rose as high as 29% during the pandemic, fell to less than 1% and remained low after the therapist became a full-time position. Compared to Employee Assistance Programs, the 116 nurses surveyed said spending time with the team therapist led to improvements in job satisfaction, burnout and resiliency. It also improved their perceived ability to manage their mental health. (Newswise , 5/8/25)
